Switching accountants
Ten steps, in order. Work top to bottom, tick each one off, and you can’t go wrong, your new firm does most of the heavy lifting.
1.Define what “better” looks like
Write down what isn’t working now, the gaps you want your next firm to close.
2.Shortlist firms that fit
Match on sector, size and working style, not just headline price.
3.Ask the right questions
Who’ll handle your account, response times, what’s included, proactivity. Compare scope.
4.Choose your new firm first
Line up the new accountant before you resign from the old one.
5.Complete ID checks & engagement
Pass the anti-money-laundering checks and sign the letter of engagement.
6.Let them request clearance
Your new firm writes to your old one for professional clearance and your records.
7.Confirm records are handed over
Accounts, tax returns, trial balance, payroll and VAT records, handed over promptly and free.
8.Authorise with HMRC
And with Companies House too, if you run a limited company.
9.Diarise your filing dates
Agree the next deadlines with your new firm so nothing slips in the handover.
10.Cancel old payments
Stop any direct debit or standing order to your previous accountant.
Good to know: you can switch at any time of year, you don’t need to wait for your year-end, and your old firm must release your records free of charge.
